Most people think they're better than average when it comes to listening. The truth is we're far worse than we realize. We retain only about 50% of what we hear when engaged in conversation. Add in a distraction, like your nearby cellphone, and that percentage drops to 30%. Why? Because our brains process information faster than people talk. So, we quickly become bored and look for other things to occupy our mental free time.
