About this Class
For most people, there is a strong desire to repay our debts, return a favor, or even seek revenge. We neither like to feel obligated to someone nor feel as though someone has harmed us and gotten away with it. Why? Because giving back – both in kindness and retribution – is not only how we’ve evolved as a species, but it’s also embedded in our psychological need to feel free. Simply put, we do not like to owe anyone anything.
What You'll Learn
Reciprocity – to return something in kind – is an emotional driving force that has the power to strengthen relationships, earn trust, and turn adversaries into allies. But its influence can also corrupt our way of thinking, causing us to seek vengeance above all else which can quickly hinder our ability to become better more productive people.
Understanding why and how reciprocity works helps you positively impact those around you as well as recognize when its control over you is unhealthy and harmful.
In this session, you’ll learn:
- The importance of evolutionary reciprocity and why it still matters
- The 4 factors that influence reciprocity’s power
- What reciprocity is and isn’t
- How to unburden yourself from its control when you feel harmed or slighted
“Reciprocity is a deep instinct; it is the basic currency of social life.”
— Jonathan Haidt
